The Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Education, has announced plans to construct emergency girls’ dormitories for the Northern School of Business (NOBISCO) and a 12-unit classroom block for Labone Senior High School, following recent fire outbreaks that disrupted academic activities at both institutions.

The interventions come in response to separate fire incidents in the Northern Region and Greater Accra Region, which displaced hundreds of students and raised serious concerns about safety and infrastructure resilience in public second-cycle institutions.

Government Moves to Restore Teaching and Learning

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Education, the Government described the incidents as deeply troubling and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety, welfare, and continuity of education for affected students.

“The Government is deeply concerned about the impact of these unfortunate incidents on students and school communities. These emergency infrastructure projects are intended to restore safe, secure, and conducive learning environments as quickly as possible” the Ministry stated.

The fire outbreak at NOBISCO destroyed sections of the girls’ dormitory, forcing students to seek temporary accommodation, while the incident at Labone Senior High School disrupted classroom activities and affected academic schedules.

Fast-Tracking Reconstruction with Improved Safety Standards

The Ministry assured students, parents, staff, and the general public that reconstruction works will be fast-tracked, with enhanced safety measures to prevent future occurrences.

According to the statement signed by Hashmin Mohammed, Press Secretary to the Honourable Minister of Education, government is collaborating with relevant agencies to ensure the new facilities meet improved safety and fire prevention standards.

“We are working closely with relevant agencies to ensure that the new facilities meet improved safety requirements and are completed within the shortest possible time,” the statement added.

Commitment to Education Infrastructure Nationwide

The Government reaffirmed its broader commitment to strengthening educational infrastructure across the country, particularly in emergency situations that threaten the safety of learners and disrupt academic progress.

Education stakeholders have welcomed the intervention, describing it as a timely response that reflects government’s resolve to protect students and sustain learning, even in the face of unexpected challenges.
