Akim Swedru Member of Parliament, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, has strongly criticized Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, for his recent petition seeking the removal of Abena Osei-Asare as Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
Nyarko described the petition as “dead on arrival,” asserting that A Plus lacks a proper understanding of parliamentary rules and procedures. “My colleague A Plus should take his time to learn the parliamentary rules and procedures properly. The Speaker has no powers to remove any Member of Parliament from a committee — not even the Leader of Government Business can do that,” Nyarko stated.
He emphasized that the authority to reassign or remove committee members lies solely with the Committee of Selection, which acts based on recommendations from party leadership. Nyarko urged A Plus to follow the appropriate disciplinary channels as outlined in Parliament’s Standing Orders.
The controversy has sparked debate over the interpretation of parliamentary authority and the role of party leadership in committee appointments. As the dust settles, Nyarko’s remarks serve as a pointed reminder of the importance of procedural literacy within Ghana’s legislative framework
