Former President of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has arrived in Abuja, Nigeria, to participate in the 2025 ECOWAS Heads of State and Government Summit. His arrival comes just a day after a significant diplomatic milestone: the ECOWAS Council of Ministers unanimously endorsed him as the sole West African candidate for the African Union (AU) Chairmanship in 2027
A Unanimous Endorsement for Continental Leadership
The endorsement, announced during the Council of Ministers’ meeting in Abuja, marks a pivotal moment in West Africa’s collective diplomatic strategy. The AU Chairmanship rotates annually among Africa’s five regions, and 2027 is designated for West Africa. President Mahama’s nomination reflects both his statesmanship and the region’s confidence in his Pan-African vision.
Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, confirmed the endorsement, expressing gratitude for the regional support. The final adoption of the nomination is expected to be ratified by the ECOWAS Heads of State during the summit.
Ghana’s Diplomatic Momentum
President Mahama’s candidacy is seen as a strong symbol of Ghana’s continued leadership in regional and continental affairs. His previous tenure as President and his role as ECOWAS Mediator in various peace processes have earned him widespread respect across Africa.
The endorsement also signals a unified West African front in continental politics, aiming to strengthen the region’s voice within the African Union and on the global stage.
Looking Ahead to 2027
If elected, President Mahama would succeed the current AU Chair, President João Lourenço of Angola, who assumed the role in February 2025 on behalf of Southern Africa. Mahama’s potential leadership is expected to focus on peacebuilding, economic integration, and sustainable development across the continent.
As the ECOWAS Summit unfolds in Abuja, all eyes remain on the formal adoption of this historic endorsement and the broader agenda for regional cooperation and stability.
