NAIMOS Taskforce Launches Major Anti-Galamsey Operation in Obuasi; Equipment Seized, Suspect Arrested

The NAIMOS Taskforce has carried out a sweeping anti-galamsey operation across several illegal mining sites in Obuasi, resulting in the seizure of key mining equipment and the arrest of a suspected ringleader. The enforcement action took place on Monday, November 17, 2025, following what officials described as “hot intelligence” on illegal mining activities in the area.

According to the Taskforce, the raid targeted portions of a legally acquired concession at Anyankyireml, owned by Asanti Gold Corporation, which had been forcibly occupied by illegal miners. The intruders were reportedly preventing the mining company from accessing its own site, escalating tensions in the region.

Several of the targeted locations were situated near the Obuasi Airport, an area that has recently attracted public attention due to rising galamsey operations threatening critical infrastructure and environmental safety.

Equipment Seized, Structures Destroyed

During the swoop, officers seized motorbikes, water pumps, vehicles, and other tools used to facilitate illegal mining. Makeshift shelters erected by the miners were also demolished to prevent regrouping.

Although most of the illegal miners fled upon detecting the operation, authorities succeeded in arresting one man described as a key organiser behind the galamsey activities. He is in police custody and expected to be prosecuted after investigations conclude.

Government Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Mining

The Taskforce stressed that this operation forms part of a broader national strategy to eliminate illegal mining, which continues to degrade forests, farmlands, rivers, and water bodies across Ghana. The Ashanti Region, in particular, has seen persistent galamsey resurgence despite government campaigns and multiple security deployments.

Officials say more targeted operations are expected in the days ahead as the state moves to reclaim and protect mining concessions from unlawful occupation.
