The National Concerned Small-Scale Miners Association, Ghana (NCSSMAG) has inaugurated a dedicated Anti-Galamsey Taskforce to combat illegal mining activities on rivers and streams across the country.
The newly formed taskforce is mandated to monitor mining operations, enforce compliance, and ensure strict adherence to responsible and sustainable small-scale mining practices. Members of the Association will also conduct peer reviews of each other’s activities to enhance accountability and promote best practices within the sector.
As part of its operational strategy, NCSSMAG has deployed taskforce teams across major mining areas and procured a mini speedboat to strengthen surveillance on river bodies where illegal mining (galamsey) is most rampant.
This initiative supports the government’s Blue Water Guards Initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, aimed at safeguarding Ghana’s water bodies from the devastating impacts of galamsey.
Speaking at the inauguration, NCSSMAG President, Michael Kwadwo Peprah, sent a strong warning to illegal miners operating on water bodies:
“Our message is clear: all illegal mining operations on water bodies must cease immediately. The taskforce will not compromise in protecting our rivers for present and future generations,” Peprah emphasized.
He further appealed to Association members to fully cooperate with the taskforce to ensure discipline, sustainability, and sanity in small-scale mining operations.
NCSSMAG reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the government, regulators, and stakeholders to ensure that Ghana’s natural resources are harnessed responsibly for national development.
