Study Reveals Unsafe Pesticide Residues in Cabbage and Okra Sold in Ghanaian Markets

A new scientific study has uncovered dangerously high levels of pesticide residues in cabbage and some okra sold in two of Ghana’s busiest markets, raising fresh concerns about food safety and public health.

The research, conducted by the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) and commissioned by the Centre for Indigenous Knowledge and Organisational Development (CIKOD), found that every cabbage sample tested exceeded internationally accepted Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs), rendering them unsafe for human consumption. While okra performed better overall, some samples also contained pesticide residues above recommended safety levels.

Cabbage Samples Failed Safety Tests

According to the study, cabbage sold at the Agbogbloshie and Madina markets in Accra recorded the highest levels of contamination.

Researchers reported that all cabbage samples tested failed to comply with food safety standards after laboratory analysis detected excessive concentrations of multiple pesticides. In contrast, about two-thirds of the okra samples met acceptable safety standards, although two samples exceeded permissible residue limits.

The findings point to a significantly greater risk associated with cabbage compared to okra, suggesting differences in pesticide application practices during cultivation.

Eight Pesticides Detected Above Safe Limits

The laboratory analysis identified eight pesticides exceeding recommended residue limits. Among the most frequently detected was Triticonazole, which appeared in the majority of contaminated samples.

Other pesticides identified included:

  • Acetamiprid
  • Carbendazim
  • Dimethoate
  • Dinotefuran
  • Emamectin
  • Imidacloprid
  • Mevinphos

Researchers warned that repeated exposure to excessive pesticide residues could pose long-term health risks, particularly when consumers regularly eat contaminated vegetables.

Produce Traced to Multiple Farming Communities

The study traced the contaminated vegetables to several farming communities across Ghana.

The cabbage samples originated from Begoro and Asesewa in the Eastern Region, Kumasi and Tepa in the Ashanti Region, and Adetor in the Volta Region. The non-compliant okra samples were traced to Kumasi and Lakpo in the Volta Region.

Meanwhile, compliant okra samples were sourced from Dodowa, Atomic (DVLA), Kpando and parts of Kumasi, indicating that safe production practices are achievable when proper pesticide management is followed.

Researchers Call for Better Pesticide Management

The report attributes the high pesticide residues to several possible factors, including:

  • Over-application of pesticides.
  • Failure to observe recommended pre-harvest intervals.
  • Improper mixing of agrochemicals.
  • Limited farmer knowledge of safe pesticide use.

Researchers are urging regulators, agricultural extension officers and policymakers to strengthen farmer education, improve monitoring systems and enforce food safety regulations to protect consumers.

Public Health Concerns

Food safety experts caution that consuming vegetables with excessive pesticide residues over prolonged periods may increase the risk of adverse health effects. Although washing, peeling and cooking vegetables can reduce some pesticide residues, these methods may not eliminate them completely.

Consumers are therefore encouraged to thoroughly wash vegetables under clean running water, purchase produce from trusted sources where possible, and remain informed about food safety advisories issued by relevant authorities. Existing research has consistently shown that pesticide residues remain a food safety concern in Ghana, underscoring the need for stronger regulatory oversight and improved agricultural practices.

Calls for Stronger Food Safety Measures

The findings have renewed calls for stricter enforcement of pesticide regulations, expanded residue testing in local markets, and increased investment in sustainable farming practices.

Stakeholders believe that improving farmer training on responsible pesticide use, alongside regular market surveillance, will help restore consumer confidence while protecting public health and ensuring the long-term sustainability of Ghana’s agricultural sector.
